African Art on German Car in New York

If you’re in Manhattan during the holidays you can see this superb BMW 525i on display in the Museum of Arts and Design.
South African artist Esther Mahlangu made this painting in 1991 as the first female and first African to participate in the BMW Art Car program. The BMW 525i is on exhibit through May 2011 as part of The Global Africa Project that explores the impact of African visual culture on contemporary art, craft and conceive of around the world.
Since 1975, artists have turned BMW automobiles into art signifying a particular period through the Art Car program. Many of the cars by the likes of Warhol, Lichtenstein, Stella, Rauschenberg, Hockney and Holzer have been exhibited in celebrated museums throughout the world including the Louvre, the Guggenheim Museums, and the Shanghai Art Museum. The most recent was the BMW M3 GT2 by Jeff Koons that was unveiled earlier this year.
