M-40 gas mask cansiter filter,,,safe?
is the C2 canister.the lowering one not the green one radioactive. I heard this on wikipedia. But no other sites have stated this. What i mean is the black C2 canister safe as houses to breath with.
The brute reason that the C2 was replaced was because it contains Chromium VI (6). Long term large baring to Chromium VI can cause lung cancer and other problems such as bloody nose, coughing, and breathing difficulties. From what I take it, the way that it was used in C2 canisters is fairly safe. The US Army did a study in 1982 on whether the Chromium levels were safely for soldiers. It was found that the levels where well within the limits set by the National Institute for Occupational Saftey and Health.
The biggest discuss with these canisters were replaced was because the military had to pay more money to dispose of these filters when they expired because they couldn't even-handed toss them into a landfill since they did contain the Chromium VI. They had to go through an entire "hazardous waste disposal" program virtuous to get rid of them. I really don't know what wikipedia is talking about when they say the C2 is radioactive.
The fact is that military men and women breathed through the C2 canisters for well over a decade before it was replaced, and I'm not au courant of any serious health issues that came from it. If you are wearing a gas mask with a C2 filter canister as a costume or what have you, I don't see how it would be any more dangerous for you than it was for the millions of military people that wore them. The canister should be in salubrious shape. If it is seriously dented or crushed, then don't use it, because the charcoal, which was impregnated with the Chromium VI, may release dust grain that may get through and into your mask. This alone wouldn't kill you, but it wouldn't be good for you either. Within reason, the C2 is safe to use. I mean, I wouldn't put on it everyday for hours a day or anything. Also, don't use the C2 as a working filter since it probably won't work very well for anything other than CS gas. You probably know this already.
