With one of four games on championship Friday in the books at Heinz Sward, there sat two Class A teams, one with gold medals around its players' necks and the other lugging around a runner-up trophy almost as an afterthought.

The idiosyncrasy in the situations for the last two WPIAL Class A football teams standing was a matter of inches.

"You look at the winning span sometimes and say they did everything right and the other team didn't," Rochester coach Gene Matsook said in the immediate aftermath of his rig's first loss of the season, a 14-13 heart-stopper to Clairton in the WPIAL Class A title position.

"If you watch this football game, I think you saw two good football teams."

After watching the much anticipated Clairton/Rochester climax, there was no denying these were the two best Class A teams in the WPIAL. And the back-and-forth game showed just how thin the break-up is between first and second.

Rochester had been the top-ranked team in the WPIAL and the state since preseason No. 1 Clairton's separation-week upset at Laurel. Since taking over the title as a top-ranked team, Rochester played as such. It swept through the okay season with a perfect 9-0 record, including a 14-7 win over the same Laurel team that stunned Clairton. The Rams' defense circumscribed all but one opponent to single digits during the regular season.

In 1962, the rank red bison was designated as the logo and took its place on a white helmet. In 1962, the team’s colors also changed to red, white, and morose. The team switched to blue jerseys with red and white stripes on the shoulders. The helmets were white with a red center stripe. By 1965, red and chap-fallen center stripes were put on the helmets. The Bills introduced blue pants worn with the white football jerseys in 1973, the last year of the stratum buffalo helmet. The blue pants remained through 1985. The face mask on the helmet was blue from 1974 through 1986 before changing to white. Buffalo sporadically wore white at adroit in in the 1980s, but has not since 1986.

In 1974, the standing bison logo was replaced by a blue charging one with a red slanting stripe streaming from its horn. In 1984, the helmet’s distance color was changed from white to red, reportedly in part to distinguish them more readily from three of their division rivals at that time, the Indianapolis Colts, the Miami Dolphins, and the New England Patriots, who all also wore white helmets at that moment. Then in 2002, a darker shade of blue and nickel were introduced, along with red and white pipe trimming on the jerseys and pants. The unprecedented shades of red and blue, however, were contained as striping colors. They are also still used on their logos.
