Masks don't pirate much

The surgical facemasks that you see people wearing in public may give them piece of mind, but they don’t offer much refuge from the flu and other airborne diseases.

At least that is the conclusion of Dr. Mark Levine, deputy commissioner of the Virginia Department of Condition. Levine said last week that masks may help in certain specific cases, such as when someone has a compromised untouched system. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adds that if a mask is worn properly it will block large-dot droplets, splashes and sprays that may contain germs. It can also protect other people from your secretions.

But the kind of mask that you buy in the pharmaceutical store has limited value for healthy people. “We don’t want people to be falsely assured that they’re universal to be protected by a surgical face mask,” Levine said at the department’s weekly press conference on H1N1. “The mask in and of itself doesn’t in point of fact afford any special protection.”
